Michael E Smith, PhD, MBA
Founder and Principal
ARk was founded by Michael E. Smith, an applied neuroscientist and marketing professional, with the intent of leveraging advances in understanding human behavior and decision making to speed transition to a more circular economy.
Prior to founding ARk Michael served as Vice President of Consumer Neuroscience at the market leading research firm Nielsen. Before that he was President of CorTechs Labs Inc, the market leader in developing and commercializing quantitative brain imaging tools for precision neuroradiology; a Program Officer in Cognitive Neuroscience at the US National Science Foundation; and Principal Neuroscientist at SAM Technology, a groundbreaking R&D organization focused on developing applied neuroscience tools for application to problems in neurology and human factors engineering. He has also worked in research and teaching positions in a variety of academic settings.
Michael earned a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from UCLA and an MBA from UC Berkeley. He has also completed certificate programs in Sustainable Business Practices and Sustainability and Behavior Change from UCSD. He is the author of dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals and industry publications, an inventor on several patents, and a frequent public speaker
